Some of my thoughts

Reflections after the game

Hi guys,

The match last Sunday really hit me hard and I’ve done a lot of thinking ever since. I would like to share with you guys my thoughts and I hope that you can contribute, rebut or build on my points to make the team better. Please bear in mind that whatever I have to say is solely for the benefits of the team, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING PERSONAL. And please notice that I never touch on anyone’s individual or technical capabilities but rather on the mental and tactical aspects.

  1. Team attitude

We are a very young team, there’s no doubt about that. However, this is a lame excuse for us to keep making school-boy-errors and conceding dumb goals. The way we approached the games was disappointing to say the least. There were instances when 15 mins before games, people even smsed me, asking whether games were on or not. During warm-ups, people just do the things that they like instead of gathering together to discuss tactics or do some stretching. Worse still, during games, people just play their own ways without even thinking about the tactics that have been previously discussed. The end result is always that we would concede 2 or 3 goals, after which we would wake up and start to play seriously. I mean Sunday soccer is supposed to be fun and non-competitive. Yet, the taste of LOSING is always bitter, especially knowing that the loss can surely be avoided if we just pay a little bit more attention. Preparation is what differentiates loser and winners. Unless you approach the game with a right attitude, you would find that it takes very long for you to settle down and by then, you are already 2 or 3 goals down.

2. Leadership

I feel there is a serious lack of leadership in the team during games. Leaders are not only the captain or the Vice-Cap but also those who are willing to take charge and command their areas. The team needs more from the centre-backs and the keeper. I know you guys can do much more than that. By saying so, I did not mean to criticise your individual mistakes but rather to focus on the lack of cohesion between you guys. In mid-field, without Mr. Gia, nobody wants to take the initiatives. Mr. Trung should be more commanding and control the mid-field better. I know you are always the quiet, hard-working type (like Scholes), but then, a young team like FCFC needs you to do more than that.

3. Football as a THINKING GAME

This is the most important point that I want to share with you guys. The point started by a friend of mine who recently commented something to me that really got me thinking. He said that unless I put more effort in using my head during games, I would never be able to make the step up. He elaborated that Mr. Trung and I were like star-players in JC but then we failed to shine in Uni level while others improved by leaps and bounds. This is because we just play by INSTINCTS, by just doing what we are comfortable with. And we do not think much while we play. A striker is not only judged based on his speed or his shooting but also his off-the-ball runs and positioning. Likewise for Mr. Trung, a good mid-fielder is not only about fitness, passing and tackling but also about how he approaches a game and how he influences the tempo of the game. That is why Mr. Gia is so different to us. I remembered that Mr. Gia was just an INDIVIDUAL player when I first met him. I meant he had fantastic skills but I only saw him as a selfish player who discrupted the tempo and the game play of the team. A lot of my frens also said the same thing abt him when they played against him 2 years ago. However, he has really changed now. He passes the ball more and on top of that, he can really control the tempo of the game. His dribbling is not the same as before but rather they call it ‘tactical dribbling’ as by doing so, he pulls opponents to him and open up spaces for others to run to. And that makes all the difference.

Have you ever wondered why Vietnam has never won anything in the region? It is simply because Vietnamese players rarely think hard enough. We have many fantastic players with incredible skills (Bao Khanh, Cong Vinh), however, those players only play by their instincts. They just keep dribbling and do their own things. The end result is always that we fell at the last hurdles. Take a look at how Singapore and Thailand approach their games. They know what kind of opponents they are facing and have different approaches to different games. The Thais were just playing a very patient game and waited for their chances against us whereas the Singaporeans just packed their mid-field and discrupted our play. They purposely left us a lot of space down the flanks, knowing for sure that we would not be able to score from headers. Vietnamese players are just too ‘NGHE SI’ for those ‘THUC DUNG’ teams.

That’s all from me, I hope I have not offended anyone. Please let me know what u feel and contribute to my points ya? Best regards and see you all on Sunday. Vu

nice write-up ... totally agree. Although Vu didn't personally "offend" me but I know I had my fair contribution to the lost last Sunday. If I had not slipped and let the opp. forward took full advantage of me to score the early goal, it would have been a different result. As Vu already mentioned, conceded early goal in the game would disrupt the momentum of playing, because chasing the score is different from playing at the level score or leading. I am fully aware of my lack of pace, but I am confidence in my positioning, determination and game reading. Too bad, I only had the wet ground and lousy stud to blame for my mistake ;-) Rest assure that I will be more careful and try to avoid this kind of embarrassment situation in the future.

Regarding the co-ordination between the centre backs and GK, well, not trying to do "tai-chi", but whenever I parter Minh in centre backs, I always consider him (Minh) as the leader of the defence line. Hence, I will not be my vocal self as I afraid too much instruction will also distract the our own teammates. But, again, rest assure that we will work it out to strengthen the fort. Last year, we conceded goals from the bouncing-over the centre backs. Nowaday, silly goal like that was less, because we did try to improve, to cover each other.

One of the coach used to tell me (and my teammates): there's no point blaming anyone for the goals conceded. Soccer is a team game, and if anyone is at fault, it's the team's fault. If the midfielders try hard enough to contain the attacks, the ball will not even reach the penalty area. And if the forwards put enough pressure, or didn't lose the ball easily, the ball would not even drop to the midfield area. Likewise for goal scoring, anyone contributed some part to the win, or the loss of the team.

Let's hope that we all learn from last Sun lost and will build up on times for the 1st ever championship title!!!

Our team have many very good individuals. However, I feel we are not playing as a team yet. Each of us is playing with his own instinct, his own understanding of the game. We do not have a common tactic that can act like a guideline to help us play to the team's way. Also, we don't have a good understanding of each other's game yet, thus we cannot play to each other's strength. That's because we only play together once a week on matchday, without any training during the week. In my opinion, for the team to improve to the next level, we need to do some mid-week training, but that's not easy. However, if we can do what Vu said above, we will improve and win the league. Cheers!

Since it is inconvenient for us to have mid-week training, why don't we do something before and after the game? We can come early to warm up, play with the ball, and discuss tactics. Or if the game ends at 5pm, we could some physical session like running around the field or whatever you like to boost up your fitness ...

Cheers

Thank bro Vu for your straight words !

Actually the losing last week was really worth, coz we've never been defeated before, so the mindset is that we can always WIN. Even in the game last week, when our team "got" first 2 goals, I still did believe that we'd come back.

Our team has some problems, though it's just about technical and mentality, but it's should be fixed:

1. Physical capability:
- i think the idea of mid-week training is almost impossible, so totally agree with a.Qtheboss, it's better to come early to do some stretching. doest take so much time, 15' before match and 20' after match.

2. Playing tactic:
- actually, until now, i'm still not sure what our team's tactic is, like bro Vu said, we're playing by Instinct. But can't blame it, coz we never practiced seriously.
- my suggestion: after everymatch, spend about 20' to practice some kind of football lessons, e.g: shooting, passing, attack-defend,1 on 1... => it's good 4 our keeper a.Lam also.

just some months left before end of the league, hope we'll more concentrate, play seriously and enjoy the wining again ! I love money :D :D

Coming 20 mins early is a good idea. I mean we juz have like 1 game a week so sacrificing some mins before the game is not a big deal. So next time, can everyone please come early ya? thank you.

Sorry for the late comment/reply as I had a busy week.

I do agree that last week's loss was not someone's fault but rather the whole team's fault. We arrived late. We had little warm-up time. Hence against a physical team, we just could not keep up with them. The midfield wasnt working, did not challenge in the air. The defenders didnt seem to cover for each other. The attackers just failed to convert so many chances. Yes the attitude wasnt bad. I understand that it was a friendly game. So let's take the game tomorrow as it is the final game of the tournament. Treat it as a do-or-die business.

I do notice that the fitness level of the whole team was not good (including myself). I'm glad to read that some has taken the initiative to exercise during the week to prepare for the game tomorrow. I did a few run too. Let's sleep early tonight, have a jog tomorrow morning if you did not excercise at all during the week as it helps alot. Please do not NHAU NHET or stay up late, just for tonight please.

I believe we can beat them tomorrow, we had a draw with them before (it was a come-back as usual). So if each of us put in some effort tomorrow, the whole team's performance will be boosted by alot. Let's focus, especially in the beginning of the game.

I like the idea of coming early and kick around, warm up properly. Maybe we could do the drill in which we divide the team into 2 and play passing. To do that, everyone has to come early ok.

See you all tomorrow.
I CANT WAIT TO KICK SOME ASS. HEHE.
